Waiting to go to class

Just before 7 a.m. today the Cleburne County Elementary School cafeteria slowly filled up with nervous and excited children and their parents.

For many of them, today was the first day of their school career.

At a table near the entrance sat 5-year-old Kya Battle and her mother Christina Battle. Kya said she wasn't nervous.

"I'm excited," she said.

Her mother was too as she explained to her daughter that today was the only day they had to be early.

"I'm happy you're going to school," Christina Battle said to her daughter. "You're gonna behave and not bring home a note that you talk too much."

At the other end of the table sat Kaleb Angle with his bright blue backpack. Blue is his favorite color. Kaleb wasn't a talker.

"You're going to learn your ABC's and colors, aren't you," his mother Tanya Angle said.

Kaleb just nodded.

"It doesn't seem like he should be in school," Tanya Battle said as she fought back tears.
