Supplies and Snacks

In the minutes before classes begin at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School, students hurry in and out of the Cardinal's Nest school supply store, located at the end of a corridor with fifth and sixth grade classrooms.

Book covers are the most popular item on the first day of school, said Maureen Patty, who is in charge of the store. The school requires students to cover all of their hardcover books by Monday. The snacks go quickly, too, Patty said. All proceeds from sales go to the school's Junior Beta Club, a fifth through eighth grade honor society with a community service component.

At the Cardinal's Nest, there are shelves and tables full of colored pencils, paper, notebooks, art smocks, and bookmarks. The store stays open from 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. throughout the school year. Patty spends the summer getting the store ready for the first day of school.

"I shop all summer long," Patty said. "I hit every sale in every town from here to Timbuktu."
